Home Alone. A night in Mysore

Home Alone. A night in Mysore

Based on a true incident

It was one of the days during my engineering. After a long day at college, I came down with my friends to our normal hang out place in the evening (Bakery – we used to have tea there). We had a nice chat and gossiping for an hour or so with a hot cup of tea.

Then we parted ways to our respective rooms and house. We had our internal exams coming up in a couple of days.

Before that let me give a brief description about my room. For a span of 6 months I used to stay alone at a rented place about a km away from college. The owner used to stay at the ground floor, first floor was a house again which was empty ( haunted) and on the top floor there were two rooms, one was occupied by two people from the same college and other was occupied by me. The rooms were opposite to each other and there was also a big verandah, anyone walking out of the room in sleep would directly end up on the ground. There was a common bath room. A dim light always glowed in the night outside the room. Way to the top floor from the ground was like walking through a dark cave, seriously very scary especially in the night. There were two coconut trees just touching the terrace. Verandah was quite big so as to play cricket too. Place was the tallest building in that area. Close by there was a park where kids used to play in the evenings.

I can say it’s quite boring to stay alone there unless you have some entertainment source. I really wonder how I stayed there for six months; anyways I didn’t have a choice either.

It was one day in winter, the atmosphere was very chilling. It was hard to come out of the room in the night. I reached my room somewhere at 6:30 pm in the evening. With lot of pressure to study I entered my room. The semester was about to end and also I had internal exams in two days. I had my bath with real hot water and was all set to study (So disciplined you see). Time was about 7:15 pm. That day the two people staying opposite to my room were not there, both had gone to their friends place and informed me that they won’t be coming for the night. So I was going to stay alone the whole night with only owner on the ground floor and only me on the top floor. Isn’t it scary..? I was quite scary guys. I finished my dinner at 8:30 pm, used to get home made food at 8:00 pm daily. Food was not that great. Anyways it was just for the sake of eating was really not passionate about it that day. Was back to study with full concentration. I had planned to study Machine design that day. My table was filled with A4 sheets, reference books, Xerox notes, class notes etc and not to forget other stuffs like mobile phone, wallet, and snacks. A study went on till 12:00 pm, and was very happy since I could finish few topics which were pending for few days. Still wanted to sit for another two hours. I got a call from one of my close friend Saurab at 00:15 am; he wanted to ask few doubts. We talked for about 15 mins and he had few questions like when I was going to sleep all that?

I was really tired by 1:00 am, my eyes started drooping, it was just telling me “ hey vineeth , enough buddy go to sleep baby:” and I had to listen to my eyes. I finally decided to end the day. Prayed for a minute and switched off the light. I had to close all windows also since it was real cold outside. Put on my warm sweater and fell on the bed. Ha very tired. My body really needed rest. Went off to dream world in a swift.

Here the thrill begins….

I suddenly woke up at 2:00 am hearing some foot steps outside my room, tak tak. Tak tak. Guess there were minimum two people according to me. I slept off again assuming the people staying in the opposite room are back. But my assumptions were really wrong.

The sound started increasing, now I could hear some whisper outside the room, sound of foot steps started increasing; now I was really wondering who can be at this late in the night. I could hear people hitting the floor with sticks or something. Now really got scared , I was even scared to wake up and sit in my bed too, couldn’t even open my mouth and shout for help since was damn scared. People outside stared making unusual noise and sound. Small sticks started coming inside my room from small gaps in the door. People started knocking the door hard and their voice sounded really strange.

Guys my balls were on fire. Real fire. My eyes started burning. My body started sweating. One person started shouting…knock knock...”open the door”. “Open the door”.

Finally some word came out of mouth…”Please tell me who you people are? What you people want”?

All kind of thoughts started coming to my mind. Would I be alive the next moment? Will they break my bones? Oh my god. Horrible feelings started running in my mind.

Finally I had the balls to open the window and shout “Aunty Aunty” because I used to call my owner as aunty; her age was about 50 years. She was like a ghost herself, even if she would come to my rescue I would faint seeing her, real scary.

Hearing my shouts I could hear people running down the steps, still I was scared to come out. I took out my strength out to open the door finally and come out to the verandah. The dim light was glowing. Just went to end of the verandah just to seen anyone was there. Finally I could see three people running with their face covered with clothes. I couldn’t notice any face since it was dark outside. Was not able to guess who were they? And what was their intention? God I was trembling with fear luckily didn’t have a hear attackJ. Finally stood outside for 15 mins gazing at the sky, looking at the stars and moon. Even a small sound scared me at the moment of time. Even in that chilled night I was feeling the heat in my body. Took of my sweater, and finally went inside the room. The time was about 3:00 am. God, all that I studied was gone away with my sweat.

Frankly speaking I didn’t have the courage to switch off the lights and sleep off. I had to switch on the light and sleep, and finally could see the morning light coming inside my room. It was morning yippee. Was so very happy. It was about 6:00 am in the morning. Still I had the nightmare of the previous night which was not going to be forgotten for some time to come. Still I had some questions in my mind.

As usual reached college at 8:45 am in the morning. Went to the class kept my bag in my seat and came out to gaze at some beautiful girls J .

Suddenly Saurab comes to me and says, “Hi vineeth what time did you sleep yesterday?” I replied 2:00 am.

He replies.” We slept at 3:30 am”? I replied back “How come so late”? He usually sleeps early. Then I had to break open the incident that happened last night.

When I was explaining he had a cunning smile in his face. Was I hinting something from that? I explained the entire incident for 15 mins and it was time for the class to start.

Finally I do not know what… he hugs me and says Vineeth do not worry, it was us who scared you last night and he starts laughing like crazy. Even I couldn’t control my smile. But still I had to use some “F” words against him. And he went on saying that’s the reason he had called me at 00:15 am, and it was not for clearing the doubt.

The culprits were Saurab, Ganesh and Charan, my own friends. I had a sign of relief and machine design what ever I had studied the last night was back into my brains and I was confident again. Happy again.

That was the day I decided I would never stay alone any more. And within two months I shifted to place where the three culprits were staying. I would thank them for taking me in and looking me as their own brother.

This was one of the weird and thrilling experiences I had during my engineering life. We still talk about it even after 4 years and smile and laugh over it.

Home alone…a night in Mysore.

Its impossible to count the number of times Saurabh has played pranks on u.

As far as i remember, him and Ganesh where pretty pleased with themselves the next day. It was their prize winning moment.
